This song originated from a writing exercise between me (Alex, guitarist/vocalist and Adam, my best friend and former band member. We often did this exercise just to pass the time while we talked about other things, one of us writes a line or two, and then passes the notebook to the other person, and then pass they pass it back and so on.
To start, I had had a few lyrics that I had already written (including the first two lines of the song), but didn't know where to take them, and Adam's recent lyrics had all been him processing a recent break up. Most of Adam's lyrics felt too dramatic and over the top to me, so to tone some of that down, we imagined what the song might sound like if the two main characters were animals, since the dynamics of romantic relationships often feel very primal and instinctual in a lot of ways anyway. We ended up writing this song from the point of view of a deer in the middle of hunting season, feeling vulnerable not only because of the constant need for vigilance against hunters, but also because of the removal of the deer's partner.
Late that night I wrote the music and melody to everything but got stuck on the ending, and put it away for a year or more, discouraged. I later rewrote all the music to be way happier sounding, and added new lyrics and music for an ending. After eventually showing both versions to the band much later on, the ending to that newer version ended up being added to the older version, and everything seemed to fit.
